There is nothing as vicious as a headache to put you down. It is bothersome even at its mildest and horrendous when it gets mean. We all suffer from headaches at times but spending some time alone and tranquility can put you at ease, unless it is a bout of migraine. Then you are in for a torrid time.
A Debilitating Pain
Most of us wrongly believe that migraine is just a severe headache. Only someone who has to put up with the pain knows how debilitating it is. The only thing that you can do about it is to go to a dark room and wait for it to pass. You can only ride it out, not take it head-on.⏩
The International Headache Society and World Federation of Neurology have together declared July 22 as World Brain Day. The theme for 2019 was “Migraine: The Painful Truth.”
These organizations say that every seventh person on earth is affected by migraines and it is perhaps one of the main reasons of disability worldwide. Further, three-fourths of the sufferers are women, especially in the age group of 15-55, says the Office on Women’s Health, USA.
Causes
Researchers say that certain unusual changes in substances that the brain produces cause migraines. Any inflammation that ensues puts pressure on the surrounding nerves. Genes could also contribute to migraine attacks though researchers are still in the dark on the cause.⏩
Some triggers that lead to migraine are changes in sleep patterns, bright light and loud noises, irregular meals, hormonal alterations during periods, foods that contain tyramine or aspartame, and red wine and caffeine.
Symptoms
The indications are there a couple of days ahead of the actual attack. Change in mood, food cravings, stiff neck, constipation, increase in thirst, and the frequent urge to urinate indicates that an attack may be imminent, as revealed by The Mayo Clinic.
For some, it is the aura which happens before or at the onset of the headache. The person may see flashes and blind spots, even sensation in the limbs, and also hear music or noises and might experience rapid movements that may last 20 – 60 minutes.
The attack may last 72 hours. The actual attack of migraine causes severe and pulsating pain, hypersensitivity to touch, light, odor, and sound. It also causes vomiting and nausea.
Relief In 5 Steps⏩
Always keep a diary that records those changes that occur leading to the attack. It may include sleep and eating patterns, the time and frequency of attack, and the immediate aftermath of the attack.
Stay In The Dark
Since migraine cause light sensitivity, stay in the dark as much as possible. It is easy if you are at home, but at the office, you need to open up to your coworkers.
Changes In Temperature
For some, warm baths and heating pads work while for others, an ice pack can work wonder in alleviating the pain.
Rehydrate⏩
Migraines can be aggravated by dehydration. Since nausea makes it difficult to take any fluid, go easy on the intake but increase the frequency.
Massage
Massage the points when you feel the pain the most. If movement is painful, ask someone to do it for you.
Essential Oils
In many cases, essential oils can bring relief from the pain. Oil like lavender, chamomile, peppermint, rosemary, and eucalyptus can control pain.
We hope these tips will help you through your next bout of migraine.
